It skews more towards my age range, has a better restaurant scene (at least according to the Washington Post food critic), has better access to downtown, is closer to an airport, etc. Bethesda is still a great place to live, but I actually like it less than I like Silver Spring.
I like Arlington but obviously I'm a little biased. I live in south Arlington though. I still like north Arlington because it is a touch more economically diverse than Bethesda. Of course one may want to define what consists of north Arlington. If you're just talking about anywhere north of 50 which is the official dividing line for addresses, then its def more diverse and more affordable than Bethesda.
Really and truly both have more similarities than differences particular if you're just talking about neighborhoods along the orange line cooridor versus all of Arlington north of 50. I think Bethesda has a better reputation when it comes to restaurants than Arlington. Arlington has a better reputation for nightlife and bars versus Bethesda though. North Arlington is closer to the more exciting parts of DC.
North Arlington. I think of Bethesda as being more of family oriented place. I can't think of anytime any single friends have asked if I wanted to hang out in Bethesda. It does have some really nice homes though.
North Arlington because it's still governed by Richmond.
Arlington's probably more liberal than Bethesda is. Then again, people in Arlington do have to put up with Cuccinelli, who appears to be legitimately batsh*t, so it's a toss-up.
