For those who missed it. Here is a summary of Baker's state of the county address delivered this week. What I found interesting was, aside from the FBI and the Casino effort, the other major ED projects have been in the pipeline for a minute. He has made some strides over the past two years and I like him for the most part but I would like to have read more about some of the economic development activities that are directly linked to him. Especially since he states that there are approx. 4 billion dollars worth of projects in the pipeline. I guess that is politics for you.

Altogether, Baker said, the county is working on projects valued at about $4 billion, including plans for a high-end casino. The casino, projected to open in 2016, is expected to cost $850 million and add thousands of jobs.

Baker: Perceptions about Prince George’s change as county pursues development - The Washington Post

Yeah. I read that this morning. Development-wise, activity is returning to pre-recession levels in the county. Which is when I started my interest in economic development. One thing I can say, at least we're not going backwards, which is not hard to do in Maryland.

True true.

Call me a pessimist but I will believe it when I see it. There have been some developments like Ritchie Station Marketplace and Woodmore Town Centre, that have a long ways to go, to reach their potential. I would love to see what they will do with those projects next before I am convinced things are changing.

I'm optimistic but an added bit of caution is always needed just in case But hopefully, these economic development projects will see the light of day and reach their full potential. It's amazing that all of them are worth $4 billion dollars in grand total. There's a growing National Harbor, upcoming Tanger Outlets, an MGM Casino-Luxury Resort, development at Ritchie Station Marketplace (I discovered that there's going to be a Bed Bath & Beyond near the BJ's on that large parcel of land) and Woodmore Town Center, the planned Konterra Town Center, the growing appeal of the Villages at Morgan Boulevard, the new Laurel Town Center, the planned Westphalia Town Center, development at Brandywine Crossing, a growing Arts District and downtown in Hyattsville, a possible FBI HQ relocation to Greenbelt (Crossing fingers, even though I know the construction of the new HQ will be owned by the GSA. It could add some local construction jobs and re-ignite development around the Greenbelt Metro Station), the upcoming "living greenhouse" building in Accokeek, the planned development around College Park, etc., etc. These are a lot of projects to get excited about, but I'm gonna try to not be too optimistic especially since things in this county always seem to be subjected to change at an instant.

Baker seems to genuinely be interested in turning around the county. I am cautiously optimistic about his actions for now. Let's hope that he can deliver!

Can he do any worse than what has come before him? Seriously....It's not like he is beating out the best political examples this country has ever had to offer.

No. But good politicians are known for how they improve the lives of their constituents. It's easy to be a politician when everything is peachy. Taking the abysmal perception of PG county when he came into the office and presiding over a positive transformation of that perception will certainly qualify him as a worthy politician. It's not how you start, it's how you finish.

That is really up in the air. He has become quite the polarizing figure these days. From a development standpoint, I think most can agree that he has a good grasp on the issues with the county, but it's his methods that I think some will question. For instance, he started out campaigning saying he would support casinos, but then of course changed his mind. Even though the measure won, he alienate the supporters he did have on that issue. Same thing happened with the school system, when he changed his mind about a school takeover. People remember those things. The things that he has accomplished, has lead to him stepping on many toes. It will be interesting to see what kind of support he will get in the elections. Outside of crime going down, he doesn't have a lot of tangible improvements that he has made, but perhaps people for the most part like the direction he is going.
