A blogger who posts on Greater Greater Washington made a post where he suggests a commuter rail spur that would connect the Penn and Camden lines via an old rail ROW that is pretty much adjacent to Patuxent Freeway.

Here is the link to the blog which also shows the map of his proposed route: Can MARC serve Fort Meade? - Greater Greater Washington

That guy should definitely tell MARC of his idea. I would support it.

What do you guys think of this solution? It looks like it would follow the old The Annapolis and Elkridge Railroad ROW. More information on that ROW in case you want to check it out:

I just arrived in the Northern Virginia area-- I'm going to be stationed at FT Belvoir. I'm curious, are there that many folks that live here and commute to FT Meade? If so, they must work very odd hours or enjoy sitting in lots of traffic. You couldn't pay me enough to make that commute and I'm not even sure I'd want to spend it on a train either. Your daily life cycle would be get up, go to work, go home, sleep and repeat the process.

DISA used to be located by Ft Myer, and then got relocated to Ft Meade. A lot of their employees flooded other agencies trying to find jobs nearby, retired, or lumped it and now do the +1 hour commute. I personally remember cherry-picking their best employees, and then those that got left behind...

Regarding the OP:
Extending MARC is one part of the solution, extending the METRO Green Line from DC is another. Unfortunately a lot of the BRAC moves here were made without regard for the public transit system, with disastrous results. In particular, the Mark Center has been a mess since it opened. A lot of people are holding on until they retire, then DoD will have a hell of a time finding replacements willing to move to this high priced area and put up with the commute.

FWIW, this thread may belong in the MD - DC Suburbs forum. Moderator cut: Issue taken care of

Extending the Green Line that far north seems like a pipe dream to me. It is too far from the center core. Now if they built or just ran express trains, then that could make it more believable.
