My Grand Marquis also has this stupid design where replacing the heater core involves removing the entire dash/steering wheel/carpet, the entire process being a nightmare. After the process, some parts won't fit back as well as from the factory either.

Does any car have an easy-to-replace heater core, considering it's a common failure for 10+ year old cars of all brands?

Relatively speaking, yes ... there are cars designed with reasonably accessible heater cores that don't require a major dash tear-down ....

For example, the OP's Volvo isn't too bad a project for doing the heater core.

does the dash have to be taken off in order to get to the core?

I called around San Antonio and you're right it will cost us $600 PLUS to get the core replaced and to installed new heater hoses.

We won't get this $600 back when we sell the car after getting the heater fixed.
Please read my post #9.

the dash does not have to come out on this model car.
