Honda 3,500 lbs max capacity. Volvo, 3,200 lbs. Should I buy a trailer hitch and which one? and a transmission cooler?

Are you trying to flat tow the Volvo, use a car dolly (takes the front 2 wheels of the towed car off the ground) or a trailer? Flat-towing would probably only be OK for a towed car with manual transmission. With a car dolly you are obviously very close to your rated towing capacity.

I wouldn't suggest towing far or fast with this rig - you can do it but you are putting a pretty severe strain on the Honda.

What are you trying to accomplish, just to get both cars to a new place as you move?

I don't know enough about the Odyssey to say on the transmission cooler, although in general they are a good idea for automatic transmissions used in towing.

You need a transmission and oilo cooler plus the hitch. It can tow 3500 pounds I believe with this equaipment. Also use the tow setting on the tranmission lever.

I thought the Odyssey with tow package could haul 4500 lbs. Check with your Honda dealer for this upgrade. I towed a loaded 99 Grand Caravan and Uhaul 5 x 8 trailer and going against a strong headwind I got worst mpg of 8 mpg!

Also I if its a log haul;just as a precaution I would change the transmission oil when I got thru. Smell it and any burnt smell is from it getting too hot.

Suggest you compare the cost of shipping the Volvo to the cost of adding oil/transmission coolers and a hitch. It might be about equal and you wouldn't put the Odyssey under any stress.

open trailer shipping rates are like commodity trades -- and hover around $.99 per mile last time I checked.

ship the car.

the question is not if you can tow that much weight with your van (I'm sure you can), it is if you should

i don't think you should simply becuase if you don't have experience towing and are close to (or over) your weight, you're putting yourself in a high risk situation that can be easily avoided by hiring a car carrier to pick up and deliver the car, my $.02
