Look into beetle forum online-lots of info and tech stuff. The manual diesel bug gets 45-50 mpgs plus you can do biodiesel or veggie oil. Get the beetle- nothing on the road gets more smiles.

Indeed!
I've a '63 Beetle, w/ factory moonroof. Unfortunately, buggered up the Bug's tranny and brakes some years ago - need to get her fixed someday. So much fun vehicle
My wife bought a VW Gulf diesel in 2002. At the time diesel fuel was cheaper than gasoline. That's changed. The car is comfortable to drive and ride in and has air bags all around. At the time it was highly rated in crash tests.
However, I have never seen any car that had so many problems. Many were electrical. Luckily I bought the extended warranty, which I usually see as a rip off, but in this case it has paid for itself. I doubt we will ever buy another Volkswagen.
In contrast, the car she had before the VW was a GEO Metro that had three cylinders and was made by Suzuki. She bought it in 1990 and drove it for 12 years. The only problem she ever had was the air conditioner compressor wore out after about 10 years.
She gave the GEO to our daughter who drove it for a few years and then gave it to a friend. It's still running.
My sister bough one a few years ago. She had scores of issues with this little car. Everything from the electrical system freaking out to the interior flaking away near the door handles. I went with her down to the VW service center (Desert Volkswagen / Las Vegas) and experienced first hand how overwhelmed the service department there was. The service center was filled with these beetles. Chances are that this model is more refined now and most of the "bugs" have been ironed out. They seem to have a low resale value too, so if you are thinking getting out of it in a couple of years it might not be the best for you. There is a complete redesign expected for 2009/2010.
