Hello,

I'm a semi disabled writer who needs to spend a year or two living
somewhere that's a tough combination to find: inexpensive cost of living and a healing place with access to beautiful nature. And do some remote advertising writing and web journalism.

Before I move to the South West, I want to see what's in Virginia.

I've lived in Minnesota, Seattle and New York so I can stand the cold.

I can live in a smaller town without a lot of art or hipness. I just need healthy food and nature (I like nature trails, trees, rivers, lakes, ocean, and a few like minded alternative health people, yogis, meditators, liberals, etc....

A big plus if the town is walkable and I can just keep renting a car once a month for trips to doctors, etc...

Any thoughts?

Look into the Roanoke Valley. We are in the mountains of Southwestern Va. It is the most affordable part of the state our cost of living in much less here than Richmond, Newport News, and especially Northern Va. There are always festivities, art festivals ect. And nature galore! You have many state parks, mountain ranges/overlooks, jogging/hiking trails, smith mountain lake, and more right in your backyard, plus the Ocean is only about a 5 hours drive. Roanoke also offeres public transit via Valley Metro buses. Do some research, I think you will be impressed!

Roanoke is pretty boring. Richmond is what you are looking for. It has everything you listed.

Try the Roanoke area Charlottesville is perfect for what you want, except for cost of living, and that's one great big exception. Does Roanoke have Whole Foods? Regardless of that, Virginia has numerous co-op organic farms- you buy a share and get fresh organic products.

You can't find anywhere more beautiful than Virginia, but a lot of it is near the mountains, and hilly walking. Richmond and east are flatter.

Good luck!

I say Harrisonburg. It actually has quite a few hippies living there.
Shenandoah Valley is a great area.

What is Harrisonburg like? I applied for a job at JMU and am wondering if it's pretty conservative (along with the outlying communities).
