Hey all - We're headed up to the Virginia Creeper trail for Memorial day weekend and are looking at renting one of two possible houses. The first is in downtown Damascus and the other is in downtown Abingdon. Is one downtown better than the other? I know Damascus is closer to the trail, but I'd love to know a bit more about what the downtown areas have to offer in order to better make a decision.

Thanks in advance for any information you can share.

Julie

You will find more things going on, places to shop, and places to dine in Abingdon- especially after 5 PM.

Damascus is a neat little "Mayberry type" town but it is very small and the majority of the trail visitor leave late in the day. Quincey's pizza has live bands in the evenings but mostly on the weekends I think. Between Damascus and Abingdon (but close to Damascus) the Iron Horse folks have a bike shuttle, a seasonal restaurant, and a country music dance hall that always seems packed on the weekends. I would judge that in downtown Damascus virtually the whole town is within easy walking distance, inclusive. But, normally Damascus seems rather sleepy and deserted most days when driving through after 5-6 PM after the day biking folks leave.

Unless you plan on riding the trail all day and crashing at your rental in the evening- I would vote for Abingdon. I doubt you would be disappointed in either choice, however.

Thanks so much Jim! That definitely helps seal the decision. We're looking forward to our visit.

LOVE LOVE the Virginia Creeper, especially in the spring

I also really like Damascus, but there will be more for you to actually do/see in Abingdon.

Have a great trip!

I'll pitch in my 2 cents worth. Stay in Abingdon......much more to do and see. It's only a 15-20 minute drive to Damascus.

If you like BBQ be sure and check out Parks Mill BBQ just outside of Abingdon. It's a bit "out in the country" but the food is outstanding and you will never forget the setting. Have a milk shake at Ellis Soda Shop & Grill on Main Street in Abingdon.

Here is a great web site about the Virginia Creeper Trail which is run, pro bono, by an old high school friend of mine. Probably the best coverage of the Trail I've seen. There are excellent pictures and articles about the history of the Trail.

Have a great trip.
