Hi everyone, my husband and i have visited Abingdon severaltimes and feel a strong urge to relocate there. As we know, no place is perfect , but we seemd to find some really good things there. Can anyone tell us the "down" side of the area and Abingdon. We know that people who live there can give good and bad feedback so give us the best and the worst. Vicki

It is a beautiful town, rather isolated and from I understand full of money and lawyers and it has a strong Arts community. I have never heard anything bad about living in Abingdon. I believe you may get more comments if you post in the Kingsport/Johnson City/Bristol Tennessee forum as it has a more Tennessee
feel to it.

There were several comments about abusive police there in a thread on this forum some time ago, there were six pages of nice comments about Abingdon and then on page 6:

Default Isolated

I believe that is the first time I've ever heard of Abingdon referred to as isolated. I-81 practically passes thru the middle of town and there is a fairly busy airport just south west of Bristol.

Probably the word "secluded" would've been more appropriate.

I guess perception belongs in the eye of the beholder. Neither isolated or secluded works for me.

I grew up there but have not lived there for, well longer than I'd like to admit. We do visit three or four times a year. What I see when I visit is a small vibrant town where the town leaders, residents and business owners did not let the down town turn into decay as businesses started to move to more wide open spaces.

Is there money there? There sure is. It is somewhat more expensive to live in Washington County.

Are the people interested in the arts? Sure they are. Take in a play at the Barter Theatre and then let me know if you have ever seen anything better on Broadway. Maybe.........but I'll bet not.

Have lunch at Pop Ellis' Soda Shop on Main Street and let me know if it doesn't bring back just a hint of your childhood.

For dinner dine at The Tavern and enjoy the ambience of the oldest (1790's) building in town. It's a little on the pricey side but the food is great.

Take a 17 mile bike ride down the Virginia Creeper Trail and let me know how you feel afterwards. By the way to whole 17 miles is down hill. You will experience some of the most beautiful scenery the Commonwealth of Virginia has to offer.

Those are just some of the things you can experience in Abingdon and the surrounding area. And it's just a stone's throw off of Interstate 81.

My wife and I are retired. Over the years (visiting relatives further north) we've driven through Abingdon at least 100 times. But we have never spent the night there. But it's appearance and location appeal to us.

I'm curious if Abingdon would be a town that a retired -- median income -- couple could be happy in.

The median house is value than we'd be looking for, but we can probably find somehting a little cheaper. ($100K)

We are really tired of the Georgia heat.
