I keep saying where is all the wildlife here in VT...lol...I saw more birds and animals in my backyard in downstate NY than I have seen here...(more places to hide).

Okay, so I am waiting with my son at the bus stop and see this 'animal' go up the road and down to the stream behind the neighbor's house. I first think it's a cat (a bit bigger than my neighbor's cat) but it's shaped like a weasel (*thank you Wild Kingdom & Animal Planet) and all black..

Maybe a black mink or fisher cat? I just kept thinking of the thread here "Fisher cat..." lol...

Take note that skunks are also becoming very active now and they are not too shy about hanging out near civilization. Getting close to be about that time to get the bird feeders down as the local bears are already starting to roam about also.

Weasels are very small animals...if it's bigger than a cat I doubt it was a weasel, for size purposes, I'll tell you that when I trap weasels I use standard rat traps you would use for a normal rat, they're really small animals (but bloodthirsty, let me tell you, quite aggressive)...could be a mink, they follow streams. Is this what you saw? Keeping in mind color variations...http://www.nationaltrappers.com/mink.html

It was definitely NOT a skunk..I am familiar with these in person!
I think it was a mink...it was dark black or dark grey.
I saw it very quickly going down the road to a stream.

Whatever, it was cool.
Good thing I didn't have my pointer dog with me or she would have dragged me down the road!

And the mink would have gotten the dog.

Nope, she's on a leash all the time...!
I was actually a little concerned it was a fisher or something 'mean' and might go after us (my son and I). It kind of glanced up at us and went on its way.

Anyhow, it was 'cool' whatever it was! Happy spring sight.

Mink would still win.

But mink aren't quite as bold as fishers...though I bet there's fishers around you even if you haven't seen them...

It is cool seeing wildlife...in the winter, you can often find mink trails along the streams in the snow. They follow the streams, they're always hunting for food, they look in every nook and cranny...

Here's a bit of film footage of a wild mink:

A fisher won't ever "go after you".

I find it funny how many people think fishers are some spawn of Satan animal that eats your dogs, kills your cats, and hunts your children. Sure they might take an occasional cat but so do coyotes, owls, hawks, etc.

They aren't a "mean" animal. They have a crazy scream but that's about it. You have nothing to fear from a 10 pound ball of fur.
