I just accepted a job in Montpelier and now I need to find a place to live. I have never lived in a small town or anywhere that it snows for that matter, but I have decided that I want to just dive in and live in Montpelier. I think that I would like to live as close to downtown (State and Main?) as possible so that I can walk to work quickly and not deal with the snow. Does anyone have an opinion on living in downtown Montpelier (safety, fun, etc) or have a suggestion for a better place? Thanks!

Congratulations on your job! I think downtown Montpelier is one of the safest, most fun towns I could imagine living in. If I were in a different position in life, for example, if I were just moving to Vermont and choosing where to live, I'd probably go live walking distance from downtown Montpelier.

Can you visit before you arrive? If it were me, I'd plan to stay downtown for a few days. I'd walk and drive the streets looking at "for rent" signs, go to the Hunger Mountain Co-op and read the bulletin board notices, and call the owners of places selling condos in nice old houses because some of them might consider renting out a place that isn't selling.

Congratulations! Montpelier's a great city and downtown Montpelier is a great place. You're close to where everything is happening, you can walk to everything, and it is very safe.

There are a few buildings right at the intersection of State and Main with apartments on the upper floors. Naturally, I don't know if there are vacancies in any of them, but it's worth looking into.
I hope this helps.

Thanks a lot! I am going to visit for a few days and stay on State St before I move to look around town for the right place. I will definitely check in at the Hunger Mountain Co-op for notices. Do any particular real estate or property management companies come to mind that I should also check with? If not, I'm sure I'll find something when I'm there!

I used to live in Montpelier and good rentals are hard to come by. Please be warned wherever you live in MontP you'll still be dealing with snow on the sidewalks. The plowing there is pretty bad compared to other towns I've lived in. I see this post is old. Did you find anywhere?
