Do you think in the future there will be systems where you can go from one city to the next for free?

Subsidization... most public transit systems (all of them in the U.S.) run at a deficit anyway. I still think they'll charge minimal fares to further subsidize (Boston's subway charges $1.70... it's cheap for even someone on a very tight budget) the system, but money comes from taxes, fees, etc elsewhere to run these systems. I doubt they'll run free between cities, but they already run dirt cheap in many places.

Yea if mass transit were free, it would push systems that are already deep in the red even futher.
