Hi. And I was wondering what british attitudes are toward the French, seeing as you've lived next to them for a millennium. For instance, in America they get a negative stereotype of being weak, snobby and opinionated. I'm not saying I agree with this, but this seems to be the dominant trend here--though that seems to be changing with Sarkozy.

From listening to some BBC comedy (Like The Now Show) I get the sense that the french are made fun of, sort of like Americans to Canadians, or Aussies to Kiwis, but that British people don't dislike the french.

Any thoughts?
Mackinac

Groundskeeper Willie had it right....There`s been a similar thread on the world forum for a while. But I thought someone is bound to start on here eventually. So I saved the venom for it.....And yes the general opinion of them is that they are weak, snobby and opinionated..But they can`t help it..That`s just the way they are...

hate the f****rs, every time they hear a german voice they drop their pants and bend over, then rely on us to get them out of a mess. Once we do they spend years slagging us off until it happens all over again

What can I say as a French guy, mr&mssunshine ? do I feel insulted by your rant ? not one bit.
You see, I love (yes , LOVE) Americans, Germans , Dutch, Scandinavian, Serbians, Russians (yes, Russians).
We are one and the same civilization,(Western Christian/Jew, largely English-speaking), we share the same history (Lafayette, etc) ,we all are cousins, not some kind of primitive tribes from Afghanistan, Yemen or from the heart of Africa.
You should ponder a while about that fact, it would do you good.

It's so obvious that it doesn't even need to be said; "Dieu et mon droit","The Auld Alliance", the British are probably closer to the French than all the above!

HA! And the fact that as English school kids we all get forced to learn French doesn't have anything to do with not liking them? But I couldn't agree more with mr&mrs sunshine!!!!

Very true. As Europeans (and their descendants) we are very closely related genetically--from Spain to Greece, Russia to Iceland.
