Regina Rainwater left her home. She cut back on groceries and skimped on medications.

But it hasn't been enough.

No surprise. As has been stated elsewhere, we haven't had a deep recession since the early 80's so a lot of people, especially younger ones, don't know what to expect. Why do you think its recommended that you have six months of emergency expenses stuck away somewhere? I think, and I may be wrong, that unemployment is no more than 60% of gross and most states have an upper limit. A note-I was laid off from a RR in the early 80's. The unemployment came from Railroad Retirement and was maxed at $125/week. My gross pay had been around $350/week.

When I was laid over almost 6 years ago, my unemployment was the max you could get, a whopping $330/week in New York. Luckily I had family to fall back on because it's pretty hard to get by on that in NY.

yea, well, maybe if you are unemployed you shouldn't live in an area where you have to pay 1000/month to rent a 1bedroom.
