I was laid off thanksgiving week due to a work slow down and have been collecting on unemployment since. I am making $442 a week on my unemployment but was just offered a part time job working nights at my friends gas station she runs (part time, 24 hours a week, at $8 an hour)... If I take this job will it affect my unemployment or do I need to report the part time hours I worked?

Unemployment amount
$442 a week

new part time job hours
24
hourly rate
$8
weekly pay before taxes
$192

will the new amount affect my unemployment as its just extra cash but nothing well enough to live off of ? thank you

Of course I am not advocating doing anything illegal, but has your friend considered paying you in chickens, reduced price gas or setting up a "barter" agreement, get creative.

I don't think we should discuss illegal things on this forum in any way. It is not fair...

Years ago when Dh was on unemployment they just subtracted odd jobs from his usual check. The kicker, at the time, was they told him to claim it when he did the job and not actually got paid!! It hurt us financially as he wasn't paid for several weeks. This could be different now, though.

The effect depends a lot on your state.

Unless you were a gas station worker in your prior job, I don't recommend that you take it. Working part-time while collecting UI can be a total rip off. It's like working for free, and sometimes at a loss. In my state, we get a $30 exclusion that probably doesn't even cover the cost of the gas to get to a 24 hr/wk job. Not to mention that you're out the 24 hours of your life. Tell your friend you appreciate that the offer, but it's unsuitable in light of your prior experience, and you're going to find a job more in line with the work that you just got laid off from.

It's the holidays. Enjoy your paid time off courtesy of your employer's reserve account.
