I'd like to know how many companies people are applying for and how much interviews you're getting? This is for people without that "you know this person and they gave you a job" type thing. How tough is it getting that interview?

Here's some numbers:

140 applications + more resumes sent out = 6 on-site interviews. Of those, at least 4 of them resulted in the company deciding to hire no one "because it's cheaper."

So, we're looking at a 4% success rate for application into on-site interview, and a 0% success rate for actual jobs, which is rather typical these days.

A lot of it depends on your field, too. Unfortunately, my background is in a narrow area of mechanical engineering in the defense industry, which greatly limits my ability to find any new work. People with more commonplace backgrounds would be in better shape, although if their skills are not particularly unique, they may end up competing with a lot more people, too.

Hey Rambler - what is your exact specific Mech Eng experience? Do you have a LinkedIn resume to show? Is it just 10 years at Lockheed Martin or so?

I have a broad based Mech Designer / Cad / Tech Writer resume and I'm 3.8 years unemployed. I rarely worked as a Mech Eng - only once did calculations in the workplace.

Jesse69: I worked for a decade at a place that could be considered (at best) Lockheed's slow-witted and criminally-inclined cousin...

JLBenedict: Thanks for your service to the nation. If IT people who are veterans can't find work in Maryland, a state that seems to have nothing but IT and software jobs, than this economy is truly doomed.

In the last year:

I cannot give you exact numbers on how many I've applied for because I've lost count. I can't even remember all of the companies I've applied FOR! Over 100 is what I do know.

How many interviews? Six last year, two this year. However, you put in a stipulation and two interviews I got only because of someone I knew. So, removing those, "who you know" interviews, five last year, one this year. Those two interviews gave me jobs, part time though they are. One other part time job I have right now that I earned on my own and my veteran status most definitely helped. I did have a seasonal job that I got on my own, but it was seasonal and that job has been over since January.

Rejections, meaning, actually acknowledged that I exist? 9
All other rejections I had to figure out by myself as time went on and no one even contacted me in any way, shape or form. Almost as if I didn't even apply. How nice of them.

I don't care what anyone else thinks, that is just not acceptable. As a veteran, you should be getting some kind of preference points...have you tried, (I'm sure you have), USAJobs? What about a vet rep at your local employment office? They have connections to employers who like to hire vets.

The last time I was unemployed was from late 1982 to early 1983. Keep in mind this was pre-WindowsOffice. The machine used to create the resumes was an IBM Selectric.

260 resumes sent.
1 interview.
The last resume sent was the one for an interview.

I also re-applied for a factory job I had during college/right after. They were hesitant to rehire me because I'd already been disloyal once and left the company. I had left as a management employee.
