I am 29 years old, married with a young son. I am a journeyman pipefitter from NJ. I have 5 years old experience and I have completed an apprenticeship at a local shipyard. I am at the end of my rope. I have been laid off since December of 2010 and I have no idea what to do because I am going to run out of unemployment in January. I cant let my family live on the street. Any advice, willing to relocate if anyone has any real advice?

Pack up and go anywhere you can find work. Scan nationally online for work. Union work is a strech these days, so look around to find any non union shops looking. Expect a pay cut if you find something. We hired a pipe fitter not too long ago, and they are a dime a dozen these days. Sad to see it working out this way.
No the position i had before had an inhouse union that once i was no longer employed there, i no longer had any rights to the union. its a little backwards. There are no shops in nj who are looking that i know of..
Dave that is crazy, the local here had lots a travelers, of course the local guys had first shot, but lots of work had everyone working. i would make some phone calls to other locals. Look to the sunbelt for work.
its really not a fit for Williston because i dont pipe weld. i can weld but not pipewelding. Not that i have given up on the idea, i am getting desperate. we are starting to seriously look outside the area now though.

Ok, you can't pipeweld right now, but... What is stopping you from learning? If you can find someone willing to hire you for less, but willing to teach, it might be something to consider. The more skills you have, the better off you will be in the long run. You don't wanna hit 50 with only a handful of skills, and none of them in demand. You'll be effectively retired at that point.
And unfortunately, looking to the unions for help when there simply is not enough work to go around isn't going to work. Too many none union shops around that take the majority of work still available. I've seen way too many union guys chronically unemployed for the past 5 years. The ones that still want to, or have to work go non union. They hate it, and despise the paychecks, but it's better than starving.
What did you do last 50 weeks? Did you sign up for any schooling? I hope you did, maybe learn a new trade or two...time is tough, without the additional skills, you are competing with a lot of other people.
