Yesterday was the last episode of a local soap that aired almost every day for a year or so. It was not spectacular or anything like that, but it is strange how those characters had become a part of my life so to speak. I knew I would see them every evening. Now they are gone. I guess I will miss them for a while.
What is it about soaps that makes us watch every episode? Substitute family? Which soaps did/do/will you miss?
I guess the first soap I missed when it was over was General Hospital many years ago, the earlier episodes with Luke and Laura.
In college, my room- mate used to watch that alot. It was like a big thing.
last week at 4 a.m. woke up with insomnia so "Ryans Hope" was on (lol, terrible acting) IMO though if people are really isolated, they may watch this to feel better about their own lives...its like a distraction.
While I dont watch the day shows as Im at work or school, but Id prefer a soap to the screaming and "reality tv" drama we have now. Its just- I have enough real life drama. Id rather see fiction on tv or a good Bette Davis film.
I watched As The World Turns a long time ago but had to stop watching because I got too busy with work and kids. I've watched All My Children since the late 70's, taped it, watched it after work, still do. But it's getting cancelled in September. I won't miss it because the writing has gotten so bad for the past several years and that's sad to me because years ago it was a good show.
I think that soaps let us fantasize about that handsome bad boy; looking fabulous like most of the women; having various adventures and misadventures and sharing a good cry when the bad stuff happens. On some of the shows, we have actually watched the same child play a role and grow up. the same leading man or woman, age right along with us. They make us comfortable. Even through bad writing, these characters have meant something to us. We cheer for them, we yell at them when they are stupid! I will miss the never-aging erica kane. the metamorphisis of Tad the cad to Tad the dad! It was sad when they had characters die in real life and they gave them tributes. I just hope that they give us resolution when All My Children ends.

General Hospital is still on the air, although probably not for long. ABC and Disney seem to have it out for the soap opera genre.
I still miss Dark Shadows. And Ryan's Hope. Loving I didn't miss so much because it had gotten really stupid. Edge of Night I was just getting into when it got canceled.
I will miss All My Children when it's gone, although it, too, has gone way downhill over the past seven or eight years. I've been watching it since 1972 or thereabouts, so those characters are a part of my life. I remember where I was or who I was with when this happened on the show, or that character died or got married.
Wow, since 1972?! Here there are no such ancient soaps, they all last one year, and with most of them even that is too long
Over here General Hospital was axed after the big wedding if I remember correctly.
Are the actors in those old soaps still the same as decades ago?
Would be interesting but also a bit sad to follow an actor from his childhood into his 40s or 50s

Susan Lucci, who plays Erica Kane on All My Children, is the only original actor left from when the show debuted in 1970.
Michael Knight has been playing Tad Martin off and on since the early 80s.
