I think he probably did it, but I'm a suspicious sort. I can see why the jury was reluctant to convict, that Dr.'s testimony was reasonable doubt in a handbag.
What's confusing to me is the GHB. I know some druggies, but I don't know anyone who willingly takes the "date rape" drug.
GHB is used recreationally by ravers/clubbers and to enhance sex. It's nickname is "liquid ecstasy" though it's not the same substance one finds in ecstasy pills. I knew of a guy (just a vague acquaintance) who od'd and died from it a few years back. A small difference in dosage can be incredibly dangerous.
After reading the story, yeah, I think he is responsible for her death but hard to say if it was manslaughter or murder.
Looks to me to be at least manslaughter by contributing to her death. But I would guess, based on the story, it was a wild night and they both got into it too seriously and things got out of control and she came out for the worse. His actions are suspicious. The fact that the prosecuter could not get a rebuttal witness seems to be a good cause for an appeal.
The jury probably got too confused with over their head information and used that as reasonable doubt to free him.
I think they probably got doped up on GHB like he said and she decided she wanted to leave him and he went into a rage fueled by drugs and killed her.
