For anyone who followed that trial and forgot about it, a new trial has been ordered. Judge Hudson ruled that Duane Deaver, the state's key forensics witness, deliberately and intentionally misled the jury, was biased in his testimony, the science he used to determine his opinion was not valid, that the judge himself should not have qualified Deaver as an expert or allowed his testimony, among other things.
...sorry to hear this-seemed to me the guilty verdict was warranted...
In my opinion, he is guilty, however the nefarious goings on behind the scenes of the prosecution have now quite probably let a murderer go free.
Unfortunately these high profile cases often become political and the victim is often forgotten in the ego-boosting games that LE and the lawyers play.
I've been in court recently and saw LE lie right in front of me, and the judge could barely stay awake.
However, I'm still not clear what the motive for the killing was.
According to TV court coverage of the trial proceedings, she discovered he was bisexual, having an affair with another man. Apparently she confronted him, and a furious row ensued. If I remember this case correctly, forensic exam of his computer hard drive revealed inappropriate homoerotic sexual activity as well.
Great timing! I just read that the Sundance Channel will be airing two new episodes in the Peterson Staircase documentary tomorrow night, Jan. 7.
I watched the episodes revealing how big a fraud Duane Deaver was. Even if someone is not familiar with the Michael Peterson case, these episodes are a terrific look into how so-called 'experts' can pervert justice. Deaver did it for many years.
Whether or not Peterson is guilty, I believed he deserved a new trial for reasons unrelated to Deaver, so was fine with Judge Hudson's opinion.
