Not a book , but I believe there is a website called prisontalk or something similiar to that that goes into explicit detail and has many stories from family members, friends of current inmates and former inmates of not only how they got there but what goes on behind bars while they are there.
One of the more interesting stories I read was from a former death row inmate who witnessed a murder of another inmate by prison staff and so felt concerned about his safety afterwards , he broke out only to be caught several days later. He was later released and set free and by his account, it was better to have a inmate who knew to much out of the system.
I suggest watching the tv show "locked up" on MSNBC. There are 44 episodes so far.
As far as movies the only ones that come to mind are
Shawshank Redemption
American Me
Lockdown
