Personal preference - I've been going to both for over 30 years and I prefer Hershey. I just like the walking area and scenery better - plus all the Chocolate doesn't hurt! Go to Hershey if you want, you won't regret it.
Hershey Park is our favorite....As a former resident of PA for 55 years we've been going to parks of every sort for many many years and we prefer Hershey hands down........
I grew up about 15 miles from Dorney Park and have been to both parks multiple times (though I haven't been to Dorney Park since 1994; I was last at Hershey Park in either 2006 or 2007). Personally I think Hershey Park is more family-friendly than Dorney Park (Dorney was excellent when I was younger but is now owned by Cedar Point); I think Hershey Park is also slightly bigger, though both are large parks.
If you have time, particularly if you go to Hershey Park, you should try to swing by Knoebel's, a medium-sized amusement park about 1 1/2 hours north of Harrisburg. They don't charge admission, just ride costs, and the park is very family-friendly (and has lots of shade too). It isn't as big as Hershey Park or Dorney Park, but it's decent-sized.
BTW, if you haven't already done so, you should post your question in the Pennsylvania forum.
Our family prefers Hershey. I love the development in the area with the beautiful hotels owned by Hershey Park although they are very expensive. Plus the wonderful smell of chocolate all of the time....cant go wrong.
