I get a kick out of people who go to a Cracker Barrel in another state and expect it to be different. That's like travelling across the country to see the Target store somewhere else? Same stuff, same shelf
Wawa! It became a tradition every summer when we went down the shore to stop at a Wawa for breakfast sandwiches. Now I make a point to stop at my designated Wawas when I drive up to Philly (either Bel Air, MD or Middletown, DE, depending on the route) or south (Fredericksburg, VA or the last one just south of Richmond) for food and gas. Otherwise it's usually a McDonald's or service area. I don't have much patience for a sit-down meal while on a car trip, I just want to eat and go.
Not big on fast food here - I like Chili's and Macaroni Grill. While I love to explore local cuisine, sometimes it's nice when you just need a hot meal to know exactly what you're going to get. Both of these restaurants are very consistent no matter where we go.
Like others on here, Cracker Barrel is a consistent stop for the lady and me when we want to relax for a bit. As far as fast food goes, whenever we're in the South(west) she is partial to Krystal and I prefer Sonic.
No fast food for us, and we aren't fans of Cracker Barrel either. They are "ok" for breakfast, but we don't like their coffee, so it's a last resort. We try to stay at places with a free hot breakfast, right now we are fans of Holiday Inn Express. They serve Starbucks coffee!
If we have to use a chain for dinner (we don't eat lunch on the road), my family likes the salad bar at Ruby Tuesday. Me, not so much, but majority rule dictates. We do like Carrabba's Italian grill.
Taco Bell ....Colonel Sander's Kentucky Fried Chicken.....McDonalds and Burger King....Pizza Hut......I like this stuff better than the "Mom and Pop, non-chain places". Plus somehow I'd need my meatball parmigiana subs as well.
Cracker Barrel for sit-down restaurant like others, mainly for lunch or dinner.
I'm going to go off the mainstream opinion so far here from Wendys/McDs/BK; at least most stops in the south and mid-Atlantic there are Hardee's restaurants, and to me, of all the fast food options available, they have the best hamburgers hands down. Just my 2 cents, we try to go 'healthy' though most of the time and get a foot-long turkey sub at Subway and split it. I actually prefer Quizno's over Subway, but trying to be somewhat health-conscious is unavoidable for me at Quizno's b/c I almost always get a chicken carbonara sub which I imagine is not on most dietician's lists of recommended healthy options!
Cracker Barrel as they are one of the few places where you can get vegetables with your meal.
Sonic is also a frequent stop. Also, we really like to stop at Chevy's when it is available along the road.
Otherwise, we like the Flying Js truck stops in the west as they have a lot of fresh and healthy foods. (The ones in the midwest are pretty bad.) Love's and Petro are also pretty good.
I generally avoid those free hotel breakfasts as they are generally a lot worse than what you can find elsewhere.
