If a website or the airline will sell you the ticket, that means there is enough time to make the connection in normal circumstances. You describe as case where a little extra time is needed.
I don't know if it has anything to do with their recent merger with Continental but United is booking people on unrealistic schedules. On my last trip (October) they cancelled our flight, then booked the whole planeload of us onto a flight which missed its connection in SFO due to excessive taxiing time. They rebooked me with only an hour to make connections at O'Hare and I had to argue with them to give me a reasonable transfer time . They wanted to charge me a change fee! United is our ONLY carrier but believe me I will be taking ground transport (five hours' drive) to SFO in order to have some better choices from now on. Anything less than 2 hours at O'Hare is pushing it. Maybe an hour if you have wheelchair assistance. Those folks know the shortcuts.
I just transferred to a connecting flight this past weekend at Chicago O'Hare. I had just under a 2 hour window to do so and I arrived on an international United flight at terminal 5 and had to go through immigration/border control, get my 2 checked-in bags, go through customs, have the bags re-x-rayed before rechecking-in/giving them back to United. Then I had to take the airport shuttle train to terminal one where I had to go through the TSA, get my carry-on items x-rayed, body scanner and then walk quickly to my departure gate. I made it just as there was an announcement that the boarding for my connecting domestic flight would start in approx. 5 minutes. In short there was not a minute to spare with this short connection time (and my inbound flight to O'Hare arrived 15 min. early!).
