Later this month I am arriving at LGA at 8pm and i'm staying in Long Island City area (38th/Crescent). I plan to take the M60 bus to Astoria station and then take the subway to 39th/Dutch Kills station and then walk from there. By the time I get to the station it will be around 9:30pm or so I am guessing.

I have stayed in Long Island City before and done something similar, last time the neighborhood felt a bit sketchy but it turned out just fine but this was a few years ago so I don't know the current situation. Any comments?

Question - if I feel the need to take a cab from Astoria station directly to my hotel, are there any cabs around there? Is it worth the trouble to take the bus to Astoria and cab it from there to save a few bucks rather than cab it directly from LGA itself... i'm a bit wary of cabs from airports and generally wary of cabs taking the scenic route and running up a large tab.

Probably just better to get a taxi or Uber/Lyft from the airport if you are worried about taxi meters running up the tab which usually doesn't happen. I wouldn't count on getting a taxi at the Astoria subway station. Might want to post this in the New York City forum as well.

I also agree with just getting an Uber/Lyft after a flight rather than wait for buses/subways/walking. Last time I waited for a cab at LGA it took a criminally long time, I was actually angry at the way it was set up (empty cabs not allowed in certain lanes, etc..) but I understand the construction of the new Delta terminal is done & maybe the horror is over.

But still for such a small cost you will be a short ride to LIC on an Uber, save you a lot of time at night. No brainer really.

The neighborhood could get a bit scketchy several blocks west, towards Manhattan, but no reason to head that way, but there are new hotels going up like toadstools around there I found out last week walking, will be a different nabe in 5 years. Crescent is ok though, Astoria Seafood & John Brown BBQ are nearby & good, but Astoria has some great food.

An 8 PM arrival isn't that late at night (as I have arrived much later at LGA). But if you are worried about safety I would just take a taxi (or Uber/Lyft if that your preference) from the airport. From my late night LGA experiences the line for the taxi might be long but the wait time is relatively short (as the line moves quickly with the taxi stand supervisor's aid).

Save yourself the hassle and worry and take a cab or uber/lyft.

It’s only 5 miles. A taxi at LGA is $2.50 plus $2.50 per mile. It should be a $15 to $20 cab ride. Use the NAV on your phone to make sure you’re not getting ripped off.

sounds good, i'll just catch a cab rather than risking it walking on the streets at night, thanks for the advice

update.. I caught the M60 SBS bus to the N line, the over to 36th and walked the few blocks down. It was as painless as it could be, except it's a bit rainy and cold but well.. it's NY!

My fears were overblown, the area was way safer than I imagined, many people out and about even at 10pm and gotta love New York, the public transport is without doubt is light years ahead of anything I've experienced anywhere else in the US.

Uber driver wanted $40, I did it for $5.

I am glad you had a good experience! I would assume that at 10 PM in Astoria there are still quite a few people outside.
