While you're at it, stop at Pioneer Village in Minden (I've haven't been personally but heard nothing but good things about it when I was in NE) and at the Archway museum in Kearney. I enjoyed this museum. I love Nebraska!

Something I forgot to mention earlier is that many of the restaurants, retail stores, and souvenir shops are short staffed which is another reason why the lines are long at these places. "We are Hiring", "Now Hiring", "walk-in interviews" signs all over the place.

Mod cut.

Good deal if you're retired and don't mind cold weather. Both of those months are too cold in a lot of the places I like to visit; the Rocky Mountains for example. Also, depending on the profession/field of work you're in, those months are not viable options. For retirees or those whose work schedule allows, you get to enjoy these places without fighting crowds, long lines, or energy sapping high temperatures.

Our county has an abyssmally low vax rate. My husband and I would’ve loved to go to the LOCAL fireworks show, but given the cancellations of those in nearby larger towns, we figured it would be more crowded than normal. We missed out on an extra-good show because last year’s cancellation meant they had a big stash of extra fireworks for this year. Oh, well. About an hour and half before the show’s start, having another idiot tourist towing a big camping trailer get “lost” near our home was the final straw. We did our mini tour on foot at dusk, right here. It was a great time to hear the birds and insects singing, and we saw our little buddy the Common Gray Fox.

Tour your home area and discover interesting things right in your own backyard!!!!

We have a bunch of hospitalized COVID sickees in our town, and the pandemic is still on. Proceed with caution.
I'm sorry to hear that your town is still experiencing the pandemic illness. In the state where I live for the majority of the year, the Covid numbers all across the board have dropped drastically and many have gotten vaccinated. The last Covid illness or death that I'd heard of was over a month ago.

Ugg, don't mention the camping trailers. Everyone and their grandma seem to have one or a RV and they're as thick as flies on the freeways that I traversed. I passed by numerous campgrounds along the way and the campers were packed in. The campers and RVs were so close together that a person could literally stick their arm out the window and touch the next camper/RV. Understandably the campgrounds are trying to recoup money they lost last year due to the shutdown so they're packing them in.

My question is why go camping to be so densely packed in with so many other people? You might as well drive your camper/RV to the Bronx and park on the street. You'd get the same effect. In a crowded park, you don't get to hear the sounds of nature; instead you hear generators, A/C, people on either side of your camp spot talking, laughing, playing music, watching TV, babies crying, dogs barking, slamming doors, etc., and the scenery is blocked by the vehicles.

We did Pioneer Village last week (have done before)

It is getting in disrepair, but is truly a gem of interesting history. Don't stay in motel as it is now a 1* and pretty much abandoned (as is the cafe for last 20+ yrs).

Nearby Windmill and Kearney State Park is very interesting, and of course, Ole's Big Game bar in Paxton. Lots of great food in Nebraska! Many small towns have very helpful museums / visitor staff. Watching the PBS special North Platte Canteen is a good primer, as is the Blizzard of 49 documentary.

UNL Dairy Store for good Ice Cream.

Still entertaining by piano and organ Friday - Sunday nights at Lee's Chicken in Lincoln.

jlawrence,

I think you and I briefly conversed about this on the Las Vegas thread. If I'm not mistaken and you're the same person, when you mentioned the prices that you got, I went searching online so that I could book a room at those prices. I searched for those deals and did NOT find anything near those prices. Just the opposite - the hotels on the Strip and downtown have both gone up even higher than their pre-pandemic levels. When I told you that, you then admitted that you get comp prices at certain casinos because you're a member of their rewards program or you spend big $$$ in the casinos so they reward you with those deals but not Joe and Jane public (people like myself). It's not fair for you to mention those deals as if everyone can get them. If I've mistaken you for another poster, I apologize.

While I do have my room booked for Vegas later this year ( I think it's a downtown hotel this time - not sure because I don't have the details in front of me at the moment), the price was so-so but not close to the deals that you've mentioned.

P.S - I'm not a rewards member because I don't gamble so there's no way for me to earn points.

Car rental was high, ~$40/ day, but averaged 400 miles / day, so cheaper than using my own. (And driving 22'hrs to get to our desired hub). Air... Booked ahead $49 / each way. Can't buy much gas for $100.
I was trying to assist a friend with travel plans recently in the state where I was - a rural area of a southern state. The friend checked into renting a car. Most of the rental agencies were booked up. When they did find a car available the car agency required a minimum ONE WEEK reservation. The cost was between $700-$1,000 for a mid-size car (Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra, etc.). They said forget it.

Yes, Southwest Airlines keeps advertising $49 one-way flights, I get the emails as I'm a SWA rewards members, but every city that I want to fly to the price is NOT even close to that amount. Is that price currently only for cities within 150 miles of each other? What is SWA doing, a bait-and-switch scheme?

Yes, as quiet as it's kept, there is good food in Nebraska. I love the swiss mushroom Runza sandwich. I also like Dorothy Lynch salad dressing that I was introduced to when I was there.

It's probably been 10 years since I've been to the UNL Diary Store for ice cream. It was good but it seemed that I've had ice cream equally as good in other places like Ben & Jerry's ice cream shop in Vermont (the factory) and in NY state.

I'm not familiar with the PBS (one of my all time favorite networks) "North Platt Canteen" and the "Blizzard of 49' ". I'll have to watch those when I get a chance.

I guess you missed all the cavalcades, which actually occur more frequently than parades. Instead of one or two parades a day, you get a few “mini parades” each hour. The characters are still out and about.

I prefer the olden days were you walked up to the counter looked at the menu, placed your order, paid for it, and then they called your name or order number when it was ready.
Mobile ordering started before Covid, and will be around long after Covid. But hey, if you prefer standing in a line for 15 minutes to order food and 15 minutes for your food to be ready, I guess Disney isn’t for you.

I don’t understand why people would go to Disney during a pandemic and expect things to operate normally.
