Taking an 18 day trip in August visiting Amsterdam, Budapest, Vienna, Dubrovnik, and Italy. Lots of hills and cobblestone streets. Any thoughts on an appropriate men's shoe to wear?
A good pair of sneakers. You need shoes that offer support and are comfortable. I would definitely wear shoes that lace up (better support than slip-ons) and have a lightly cushioned soul.
Something with a sturdy sole. You will start feeling those cobblestones in no time at all if you don't have a relatively thick sole. I know that from experience, just ask my sore feet.
If you wear sneakers or basketball shoes you may be pegged immediately as a tourist which may make you a target. If you notice, most Europeans do not wear athletic shoes as everyday shoes, outside of teens and young adults. A pair of sturdy leather walking shoes or loafers may help you blend in. If you do wear athletic shoes, try a dark-colored pair.
Merrell has some light hiking shoes that are comfortable, have Vibram soles, and wear very well.
Channeling Thoreau, I avoid occasions that require formal shoes.
