I plan on going on a 5-6 day trip to either Punta Cana, DR or Aruba in late summer/early fall. I wanted originally go to Cuba but getting a visa seems quite impossible now due to recent changes in policy.

Which place offers better deal? I want warm and beautiful crystal clear beaches, laid back and relaxing beautiful place. Beach and ocean is very important as last time I went to Cabo San Lucas ih the summer and the ocean was cold, large waves and not allowed to swim. Disappointed!

Aruba might be more expensive but I found it a fascinating mix of cultures and very clean. It is a dry climate unlike DR in most spots. Went to DR years back - Sosua - but it is pretty sleazy now from what I hear.

Keep in mind that late summer/early fall is hurricane season. Aruba is below the hurricane belt but the DR is right in the belt.

Aruba and it's not even close. Aruba is an extremely safe island by Caribbean standards, so much so that I felt entirely comfortable renting a car and driving all over the island with my wife and 2 year old daughter. The Dominican Republic has a very different environment safety-wise, and visitors there are often encouraged to stay within the safe confines of a resort. So to me this is not a close contest, but it depends upon what you're looking for.

Why are hotels better in DR? We don’t snorkel.

you really can't go out of the compound safely to see the country . our idea of a vacation is seeing the countryside and sites . dr can be very dangerous outside of the hotel compound. my daughter inlaw is from dr. they actually fled the country years ago .

Exactly. This is precisely why when we visit the Caribbean we choose safe islands like Aruba, where you can explore the area without fear of violent crime. The Dominican Republic is a much, much more dangerous place to be wandering on your own. But if you're the kind of person who just wants to sit on the beach at an all-inclusive resort without ever exploring or learning about your surroundings, Punta Cana is for you. Just not my cup of tea, personally.
