For me, hotel stays are due to me going to conferences/conventions. I only need an air conditioned place to sleep. Everything else is optional, although I often will watch some TV if there's time. At times, I check in at 11pm to 1am, then check out the next day, so there's not much time to enjoy any amenities really.
Wifi's even optional, as I have a game I that requires wifi for the daily levels, but I'll suck it up and use my smartphone for internet. Everything else computing I just do offline. Again, I usually spend only almost no time to a few hours of waking time in the hotel anyways.
I try to shoot for $50 to $100 rooms, although I will confess, sometimes I feel a bit concerned about motels/hotels that are too cheap that there may be roaches. With peak times/demand or hot locations, I raise my budget to $130 to $200 a night.
I used to travel every week for business and focused on Starwood hotels. I'm lifetime platinum at Starwood, so I get privileges there. My favorites are Westins unless they are too expensive.
My husband and I always go for the Mom and Pop motels. I do quite a bit of research before booking, and we have never had a problem. They seem to have a bit more character than the chains, and are usually cheaper.
B&B's
I use airbnb quite often now.
Boutique hotels
Sheraton--since I racked up a lot of points with them through work.
I really don't care for the free breakfasts at hotels, except for grabbing some fruit for later. I find that they always use those gawd awful liquid fake eggs. If I am going to take in calories it has to be good nutritional food.
I like the older style motels where you drive up to the door of your room, these newre bunker style hotels just arent as convenient and usually entail much walking from car to room as i'm suffering mobility issues i find it hard to do all the walking.

When it comes to lodging, I am a cheap bastard. Since I'm never in the room except to sleep and change clothes, I refrain from paying what most lodgings want. Hotel, motel, B&B, I don't care. All I know is that I don't want to pay $150 a night just to get some shut-eye. This has resulted in a few disappointments, but some very nice surprises, too.
In some cities, though, it's getting impossible to find affordable rates.
Has anyone booked their hotel using Priceline for Europe...specifically for Prague? I've only used it for hotels in the U.S. Thanks.
