My plan is to drive with doggie and friend, and worldly possessions in my SUV from Oregon to Florida. I asked AAA to give maps and triptick using the southernmost route but someone told me not to use that route because of its proximity close to Mexico and potential crime. I certainly don't want to be the victim of auto theft or my belongings.
Does anyone have any personal experience or knowledge regarding this issue ? Thanks for your help and advice is welcome
From what you have written, I am assuming that you have concern over taking the I 10 through Texas, particularly round El Paso?
I'd be more concerned about what happened to the SUV when you leave it overnight.
I just did a google search on driving from Portland to Orlando and the route took me through the middle of the country, nowhere near the Mexican border.
Thank you for your comment. I will be heading east from the Medford area, so I thought the southern route would be more efficient and direct to Florida ...... but now that I'm concerned with the safety issue, I'm willing to redirect my effort.
I'm trying to figure out why you would even be concerned specifically on this subject? "Close to Mexico" is not Mexico...US interstates are no more dangerous near the Mexican border then the Canadian border. And regardless I can't imagine any route from Oregon to Florida getting within 250 miles of the border unless you are traveling wayyyy out of your way.
Focus more on driving safety, vehicle care, weather, drowsiness while driving, regular stops, etc. Those are your real concerns.

I can testify to that having driven across West Texas more than once.
What month are you looking to make the journey? I'm thinking about possible road conditions at the time.
The possible time frame for the cross-country drive will be at the end of May.
I asked so as to get an idea as to whether there would be any weather concerns for the trip across the Rockies etc.
I trust the dog is okay travelling?
