District of Columbia is not a state, and I ain't too sure about Louisiana neither.
43 - Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
Need 7 more: Alaska, Hawaii, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Oklahoma.
Most excited for Alaska, Michigan, and Hawaii, but looking forward to them all.
Nebraska will in all likelihood be the last one I hit.
My favorites have been Louisiana, Tennessee, Georgia, Oregon, Maine, Washington, and New Hampshire.
As of now, 48. When I met my husband 4 years ago, we decided to visit all the states together (even if we've been to them separately), so we went to all those in a 4 year span. We don't count a stay unless we spend a night though, driving through doesn't count. And airport layovers most certainly don't count! Only Alaska and Hawaii left, but no rush for that. Not bad for someone under 30!

As I am not born in the USA and have just been here for about 1 year, I have only been to:
- Pennsylvania (where I live)
- New York
- New Jersey
- Ohio
- Illinois
- Michigan
- Maryland
- Virginia
- Georgia (Atlanta Airport only - do you count that?)
- Washington
- Oregon
- Massachusetts
- California
- Florida
- Nevada
- Arizona
- Utah
- DC (state or not a state, however)
That would be 17 or 18, not bad for one year, but to me not enough.
I have been to all EU countries except Lithuania, Latvia, Romania and Bulgaria, Cyprus and Ireland. Most hopefully, I will go there soon.

Saving the best for last.
Get yourself to Acadia National Park once the season comes, and do a weekend in New Orleans.
