Yes it is. It's pretty clear that the OP was referring to a hold when he said deposit, so all this chatter about hotels not taking out literal "deposits" is irrelevant.

Some hotels DO take deposits. I've stayed with at least three places in 2014 who charged the first nights stay to my credit card at the time of booking, even though I wouldn't be staying for several months. This is very common at busy convention hotels and resorts.

This I have experienced, but as noted, only at certain places. Mandalay Bay is such a hotel for sure. They will ask for the first nights stay if rooms are or will be at a premium and you haven't paid for the room yet.
