My vote goes to other, which would be Fort Worth, San Antonio, Amarillo, Lubbock etc. Although Dallas, Austin, and Houston have these things, I don't get the full "cowboy/rodeo" vibe from either of these three cities.

San Antonio is second place. Remember Texas was part of Mexico first. There is a lot of brilliant Tex-Mex culture in San Antonio.

Fort Worth is great if you like cowboys, stockyards, rodeos, farms, country hicks, and so forth.

I agree that it is Fort Worth, but out of those three choices, it's got to be Austin. I don't know why anyone picked Houston. It does host a big rodeo and people do drive big cars and wear jeans, but that's where it stops. It's the most international of any Texas city and certainly doesn't pride itself in being Texan nearly as much as Austin does.

This is probably the most accurate statement about Houston in this thread so far.

I third this. In my mind, San Angelo represents what most would consider "true Texas."

Fort Worth fits the cowboy image very well IMO. As far as the medium sized/smaller Texas cities go, I'd probably say Amarillo.

There is actually a reason that I am asking about the 3 I mentioned. The reason isn't important though for sake of this discussion. Take away the "other" option and the votes are fairly close but it appears that very few people who have voted for Dallas or Houston are explaining why. Any ideas?

Because they are big cities and what is described in the OP is alot less common in big cities. As I mentioned before, Dallas doesnt even have a rodeo.

Dallas and Houston don't usually fit the Texas stereotypes.
