Judge blocks order limiting Texas ballot drop-off locations

Abbott’s order dramatically reduced the number of places in Texas where voters could drop off mail ballots during early voting.

A federal judge in Texas on Friday halted Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s order that shuttered dozens of mail ballot drop-off sites weeks before November’s election, authorizing only one for every county no matter the size.

Abbott’s order dramatically reduced the number of places in Texas where voters could drop off mail ballots during early voting and most heavily impacted the state’s largest cities, which are also Democratic strongholds. He issued the order Oct. 1 as voters had already begun returning ballots for the Nov. 3 election.

The move brought swift accusations of voter suppression from Democrats and voting rights groups, including the League of United Latin American Citizens, which filed a lawsuit over the order earlier in October.

Gilberto Hinojosa, Texas Democratic Party chairman, said in a statement that Pitman’s decision stopped the governor from “making up” election rules after the election started.

“This important ruling stands up not just for voters but for the Rule of Law,” he added. “This isn’t the first time Abbott and Texas Republicans have tried to suppress the vote, and it won’t be the last.”

Abbott’s order also emphasized that poll watchers can observe ballot deliveries, which comes as President Donald Trump urges his supporters to go to the polling places and "watch very carefully” raising concerns about possible voter intimidation.

Texas is one of just five states not allowing widespread mail-in voting this year. Polls show unusually tight races in America's biggest red state and Democrats could take over the state House of Representatives for the first time in 20 years.

The U.S. Postal Service informed Texas in July that, given the state’s current mail ballot request deadline, some ballots may not be delivered to voters by Election Day, and that even if all ballots reached voters on time, there was a “significant risk” that completed ballots postmarked on or near Election Day would not be received by the state’s Nov. 4 deadline.

As my wise father advised me, all that red/blue business is just national nonsense. Texas locally has tended to vote traditionally for the winning side regardless of voter fraud. What governor Abbot is up to is enforcing the law enough to make things fair, generally speaking. In the end, I don't think the Democrats encouraging people to vote for a mentally deficient person with one foot in the grave and a left wing extremist backing him up as vice president - all out of hatred to keep president Trump from winning reelection - is going to do the trick.

I think the Democrats are more concerned about the coat tail effect. They already know they have lost the election. Their concern now is losing the house, the senate, the supreme court, and the presidency.

Whether they win or lose, both the Democrats and the Republicans will win as, with winks, smiles and their thumbs up, they will get together to rub elbows praising themselves over steak, fine wine, and sweet cheesecake. Figure unless a meteor hits Washington D.C. obliterating the whole absurd system, the people will always be the big losers regardless of their political persuasion.

The odds are pretty favorable that Biden will win so I don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s definitely more than 50/50 in Biden’s favor.

The fake news is also claiming that the idea of a "Deep State" is science fiction. What we are all certain about is that ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, FOX, and PBS all participate in an agenda to project fake news. That this fake news would pooh pooh the idea of a Deep State makes me suspicious. Perhaps the Deep State is in control of this fake news? Rather than take polls to project a winner, let's just have the election.

Now, projecting the nation's population during the next census sounds like a great idea to me! They estimate the population every year anyway.

Good for this judge. Imagine the entire San Francisco Metro Area with one drop off box. That's 4.7 million people--the same as Harris County, TX. What a travesty that would be.

There is no evidence of mass voter fraud and the Trump administration has provided zero evidence for the past 4 years...it's hilarious, the postal service delivers 1.3 billion christmas cards no problem but now republicans are pretending like they cant deliver ballots? LOL nice try.

The attempt at voter suppression was very obvious.

What is fake news? Everything unfavorable to the president and his administration? So when news is favorable to the president and the administration it's not fake? Please. Could we please stop this?

I’m no Trump supporter but I do just want to note that it’s not over till it’s over, technically Hillary also had the lead over Trump just up till the Election before Trump won electoral vote. As for this though, I agree that this was blatant Abbott trying to perform voter suppression over blue highly populated counties. There was no way that was truly going to increase security.

For anyone who is interested in this topic, this is also talked about over the in San Antonio section of the forum:
https://www.city-data.com/forum/san-a...ppression.html

On page #2 and #3 (and some of the following pages) of that thread, I go into detail about the obviousness of the current Administration and Abbot's (a Republican's) order to suppress the vote.

Perhaps a history lesson will help...

In the last thirty years, Texas has voted for the winning presidential candidate three time, and the losing candidate five times.

And voter fraud is so miniscule as to be statistically non-existent. Both in Texas and across the country.

Any other "facts" you care to share with us?
