My husband and I are looking to relocate to Temple, Tx. The transfer locations for my husbands job are in the major cities, Temple and Waco. Just this past May we went on a trip to Waco for a visit and to scope the area, and on our way back to Austin we were really impressed with Temple. To me it reminded me of my hometown of Murrieta, CA. So I really loved it. My husband has a better chance with his job in Temple than Waco. His job has more positions in the Temple location.

We are coming from the state of Washington. 10 minutes from Portland Oregon. We are conservatives and want to get out of this state! We don't have kids yet, but want to set roots somewhere that values family. I'm originally from Southern California so I'm used to the heat and my husband loves the humidity.

We want more outdoors, things to do around town (even somewhat nearby). We are wanting to buy some land with a fixable house. So we are wanting to know what life is like there. Is it possible to buy old/beat up property? It seemed like it was a lot of new development in Temple. We are willing to even look on the outskirts of Temple. About 20-30 minutes.

Any info would be much appreciated!

Yes, first question is "what is your budget?"

Congrats on the probable move by the way - hope you love Texas! Get ready for a long, hot summer though!

There are a lot of options going out towards Belton Lake for property like you describe. The lake is nice. Managed by the Corps of Engineers, but lots of parks/access points. Great fishing! Primarily largemouth, and hybrid bass. You can go about 15-20 minutes south to Stillhouse Hollow for smallmouth and stripers. Both are great boating lakes. Stillhouse has a large number of hiking and biking trails.

One thing to be aware of, the closer you get to Belton Lake, the more you will hear the sound of freedom coming from Fort Hood across the water. Not uncommon to hear tank and bradley gunnery, artillery, and see helicopters flying overhead.

The development of Adams Ave. going from downtown Temple out towards the lake has really picked up in the last decade. Lots of shopping and dining options.

Belton is also worth a look. Smaller town, but more close knit.

What I meant by that was in addition to the big city locations there also the small towns of waco and temple for transfers. We're born and bred city people. Not wanting the big city transfer locations.

About 120k kind of a tight budget, but wanting to live below our means.

Around 120k. It's not huge, but we want to live under our means. Thank you! I fell in love with it when we went to visit Oh and how I miss the heat. 9 months of straight dark, dark clouds and rain in the PNW will drive you crazy!

Speaking of Belton - it's a world famous speed trap on the major highway through that area, so BE CAREFUL. You WILL get a ticket if you are speeding, and it's easy to speed in that area because you come down a big long incline into Belton.

My advice is to rent for at least a year to make sure you are happy with the area. Once you feel comfortable, you can look for a house at your leisure and not be rushed.

I lived in Temple for 13 years and enjoyed it. Easy to get around, some "big city" amenities without the traffic/crowds, and easy to get to Austin if you have to.

Good luck.
