This is helpful, thank you.

I'm a Cummins guy, nothing like a 12 valve sound full deletes. Love it.

Thank you guys very much for the suggested cities to look into, it really helps.

My wife is in Human Resources for Penske Automotive. If she can't find work it's not a big deal, I am fortunate enough to have the opportunities to work and make a living for us both. I plan to leave CA and work from home mostly. My wife would not have to work really other than maintain the home and garden.

Another question for you all, where in Texas can I buy 1+ acres of unrestricted land for "cheap"? I want land I can build on with no restrictions, but prefer land with a house already on it, no more than $300k. Is that doable?

Looking at the other states I've been considering, Duchesne, Utah for example I can get 5 acres of mountain land, a big beautiful 2500+ sqft cabin home, for $200k or less. Looking for deals like that, if even possible, in the great state of Texas.

So are you a DuraMax or Powerstroke guy?

What is your wife's profession or does that play a part in your decision?

It has been said before on these boards but, if it matters, the better soils are east of I-35 (less rocky to sandy loams). Most folks like to have small gardens.

I have lots of suggestions but like my 1st sentence refers to the possibilities are nearly limitless if you stay out of the major cities (Which are where the lib/Dem and ghetto/gang/low income housing concentrations are). I'd recommend a couple of acres just outside a small to moderate sized city. If you want your own gun range (on your land) I'd look at 10 acres or more which a range could safely be built)

Welcome to Texas.

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated please. I would love some green fields over desert and dirt. And yes a big part of me looking into Texas and preferably a house with land is so I can freely shoot my guns on my property too without having to drive to public ranges or BLM. BLM in CA is 1.5 hrs away from me, that's the nearest, and only goes out to 400 yards. I would love land where I can shoot freely and ring steel at 500 yards or more.

You can get land for much cheaper than that, but costs will obviously vary by location. Land will clearly be more expensive near the bigger cities. My guess is the most expensive rural land will be in the hill country. East Texas is very pretty and I've seen some nice land that abuts the national forest.

Outside of Big Bend, you won't have opportunities for mountain land if that is really important.

Thank you for your suggestions, please keep them coming. I am flying out to Austin in May with my wife. We want to explore Taylor, New Braunfels, Bastrop, similar areas. I want country style living, but just outside of city limits. Don't want to be too far away from civilization and hospitals and Walmart. To live just outside of Austin for example, or another major city, but in the country, would be my number one choice.

Mountain land is awesome but after seeing it on the map, it is bordering Mexico, literally borders it, and the only thing that comes to mind living in that area is cartel, drug lords, traffickers, illegals crossing, and I don't want to be anywhere near that. But please, any other suggestions, I am open to them. I am flying out to Austin to visit neighboring cities in May with my wife. I am compiling a list of nearby cities I want to visit while out there.

I believe by law you need 10 acres to shoot on your property safely. But I will take waht I can get in my budget. Even if it is under 10 acres. I can always go shoot on BLM land.
