US: ~621,000 single family home permits for 2013

Texas: ~90,000
Houston: 34,510 (38%)
DFW: 20,810 (23%)
Austin: 9,240 (10%)

not bad considering no more government forced subprime housing for starter homes builds.

There's plenty of other subsidies driving that.

The numbers seem a little confusing...

The difference between Austin and San Antonio doesn't really make any sense.

New Single Family Homes

Austin 9,240
San Antonio 5,840

New Multi Family Units

Austin 11,910
San Antonio 2,380

But population wise since 08' Austin on average has gained 51,289 and San Antonio 44,372 people per year. Where is San Antonio putting them all because it doesn't appear they are building many new units.

Remember there is existing inventory of older houses, trailers extended stay hotels ect.. I don't know where you get your New Multi Family Units figures but I guess the same goes for that as well. Also remember year to year population growth figures are estimates. BTW the US Census will be releasing their estimates for 2013 in the next month or two.

I don't have Excel, and don't feel like panning out $108 for it at this time so thanks for the info.

It's interesting that multifamily starts were about the same in both metros. I guess Houston has a lower inventory of single family housing than DFW.
