Please. The Ozarks are pretty in a lame kind of way, but if I had to drive 9-10 hours from Houston or Austin, I would a thousand times rather be here:

The Ozarks are gently haunting. They're not the hot Amazonian vixen with a dangerous streak - they're more like the quiet, mysterious woman you've known for years and yet you realize you really don't know at all...and you'd like to.

To each his own, sir. I never said the Arkansas mountains were this major world destination, but they are about the nicest place that's closest to Houston. The Ozarks are about 9 hours away. The Ouachitas (which are much nicer, in my opinion) are only about 5 to 6 hours.

If I ever want to see Mexico then I'm flying. No way am I making that a car trip. The drive through East Texas up into AR is one I'm more than happy to make, though.

OK - never been there but I've been indoctrinated to dislike it. That being said, I don't imagine I'd find much to like.

AR - gorgeous state but they have to have more hillbillies per capita than any other place I've been.

LA - Not a fan of the northern part of the state. I like most of the state south of Alexandria. Most amazing food on earth in my opinion.

NM - It's OK. I don't have a particularly strong opinion about it but I would like to go back and explore it a bit more.

OK--from what I've seen, not much to it, but then, I only glazed the southeastern edge on the way while going to Ft Smith ARK.

AR--beautiful, the Ozarks up north especially (roughly 1 hour south of Branson MO). I haven't noticed how "hillbilly" it is or isn't. I can say people seem less fearful of camera guys there than they do in TX, I was snapping away liberally at a swimming hole (Pruitt in Jasper) and no one seemed to care at all. In TX they'd absolutely flip out and yell "PERVERT!!" repeatedly.

LA--I've been to Shreveport. Is it me, or is Shreveport just a trashy place overall other than the downtown area? It's a city of 500,000 but I have never been able to see anything of significance there. And the roads, man the roads, they are BUMPY. The reason so many in LA don't have all of their teeth, it's not because they're hillbillies or such, it's probably because their teeth get knocked out from them having to drive on those awful roads.

NM--a beautiful place when I've been there, but then I'm partial to desert landscaping. They seem to have some goofy politics though (the man/wife photographer being sued for discrimination for not accepting a gay-lesbian on as a client for a wedding shoot because the photographers don't support gay marriage).
