Can anyone tell me about the plans for a billion dollar plus oil refinery being built in Port Arthur? I hear a very large oil strike has been made in the gulf and a huge new facility is to be built. I know not everyone is thrilled about this type of industry, but it does bring jobs. Would appreciate any info on this new facility and the current strikes being made for oil and gas in the gulf.

Not far from me Thyssen Krupp is building a 3 billion dollar steel mill north of Mobile. I know they will be pretty energy-intensive.

Motiva is expanding the refinery to add an additional 325,000 BPD of production capacity. The expansion will make it the largest refinery in the US. It is scheduled for start up in 2010.

Appreciate your prompt reply. I guess Port Arthur is pretty much the refinery capital of the country. Is it really as bad as they say as far as smell and pollution? People say live in west Beaumont to get away from the industrial plume when the wind blows. I wonder if there is any waterfront development in the area that is not "down wind" from the oil stuff.

Port Author has a lot more problems than just smell and pollution, which are indeed bad.

You couldn't pay me to live in the city itself. It's a hellhole. Except for work, I'd stay as far away from there as possible.

Definitely. You do NOT want to live in Pt Arthur. The surrounding towns (mainly Pt Neches and Nederland) are entirely different environments, although still close to refineries.

There has been a lot of development happening in the Bridge City and Orangefield areas, although still quite a bit of lower income there. They are a little farther from the refineries, but close enough to work at them.

Smell wise, well, it can be noticable at times, but usually not that much (even to people who don't live around here).
