I have family (Cousins) and relatives that live in Edinburg and Mcallen and Brownsville Texas. The music department at Brownsville has gotten good reviews which is good. I have a few questions though about the social aspects and about the crime.. I used to live in Hawaii to go to college and racism was kind of a problem at times. I m half mexican and half white but i look white. I going to visit my family there in few weeks from now so i will know for sure..

You might consider posting this in the regular Texas forum. Brownsville is 140 miles from Corpus, and most folks in this area go to A&M Corpus or Kingsville, with some getting education at DelMar.

But then again, someone here may be able to chime in.

You can learn a lot about the community here https://www.city-data.com/city/Brownsville-Texas.html You will probably want to spend most of your time in summer on South Padre Island, or go back to visit family in Canada, to get away from the heat. Even though people talk a lot about crime along the border, the crime rate in Brownsville is quite low, not much above the US Average. If you look only at the total violent crime in the area it is really low compared to other cities of its size, way below the average. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_...%93_250,000%29

There is some negativity in these threads, but also some good positive information.

How is Brownsville?

Is University of Texas-Brownsville really a horrible college/university?

I am a UTB student. The campus is beautiful and tuition is VERY cheap.... About $5000 a year. There are many programs available: Bachelors, Associates, Certificates... I would say that a lot of people are concerned, since Brownsville is the bordering city into Mexico and the campus is literally 100 feet away from the border. Lol... But you really have nothing to be concerned. Thankfully, we have a wonderful group of Customs and Border Patrol who take care of any situation. Anyways, I'm hispanic, but I am white complected and never have I ever had an issue with "racism." People are very nice here and overall it's a very nice city. Night life is okay, but you can head to Mcallen which is like an hour drive for awesome night life. It's not a boring city... Plenty to do.

That's not just Brownsville, that's most of the Texas border cities. What seems to elude the media and most people is that there IS a lot of crime on the border - virtually all of it on the Mexican side of the fence.

And, indeed it does spill over from time to time no matter what anyone else tells you.

Dude--we don't call 'em "snow birds". We call 'em "Winter Texans".
