We live in Houston, but have lived in the Austin area, San Marcos area, San Antonio area (about 40 miles north of SA), and our family lives in the Ft. worth area.

We are thinking about either either a vacation home, or renting a spot to go back to often for vacations and just to get away. We would ideally prefer some place outside of Texas, but we have a 6 and 2 yr old, so travel costs and burdens are a concern, at least while they are little. But driving distance with a max of about 6 hours is good for us.

I grew up in the hill country and love it there. We love Austin and the surrounding area. Would preferably look into a lake house.

Where would you look into a vacation home within Texas? Also looking at getting into camping, so good places for camping are appreciated as well.

Thanks! The Midland move didn't pan out, so Houston is where we are staying. I really like Houston as a city, but I miss the hill country where I grew up. My family owned a 500 acre ranch that I grew up on (it's in my aunt's ownership now, and it's a long story - but I don't go there anymore).

While my dream would be to vacation somewhere up in the NE area (Oregon, Utah, Washington, etc) - I would love to be able to go there more frequently than that. And the cost of flying a family of 4 anywhere is atrocious. So I figure we better keep it rather local, at least for now. Maybe once we are past carseats and strollers and such, something further would be more doable.

Marfa and Alpine are out in west Texas/Davis Mountains. It beautiful, and remote and has become quite a nice artist area. Alpine is especially nice when it's hot in the rest of the state because it is up in the mountains and much cooler. It definitely would not be within your 6 hour driving distance however.

Forgot to mention, if I was looking for a lake house within easy driving distance of Houston, the hill country and San Antonio, and had the money, I would be looking at Lake McQueeney or Lake Dunlap between Seguin and New Braunfels. I love it there, especially Lake McQueeney.
