Best vacation areas

We are thinking about either either a vacation home, or renting a spot to go back to often for vacations and just to get away. We would ideally prefer some place outside of Texas, but we have a 6 and 2 yr old, so travel costs and burdens are a concern, at least while they are little. But driving distance with a max of about 6 hours is good for us.

I grew up in the hill country and love it there. We love Austin and the surrounding area. Would preferably look into a lake house.

Where would you look into a vacation home within Texas? Also looking at getting into camping, so good places for camping are appreciated as well.

Don't know how long you've been gone, but Austin is getting really crowded, and it's just going to get worse. Unless you love dealing with traffic, I would not think of a vacation home here. Maybe way out further in the Hill Country. Maybe also somewhere on the Texas coast, if you're willing to pay the higher insurance (but perhaps the extra cost could be offset by renting it out, especially in popular destinations like Galveston, Port A, Padre.)
