Is Houston the only city in Texas with multiple area codes (281,713,832) inside its city limits and the same three for its surrounding areas besides Galveston (409) which i guess could count as a fourth for the surrounding areas. Back when i first moved to SA for school i always saw numbers in the xxx-xxxx format and wondered how the hell am i suppose to know what area code to dial until i found out 210 was the only one. Is Houston the only place like that?

When I was growing up in Georgetown, Texas, not only did you not worry about the area code, you only dialed 5 numbers - everyone was 863-xxx, so you just dialed 3 instead of 863. I think that lasted well into the 80s.

I'm thinking the 210 area code is just Bexar County, right? It seems like 830 is the area code either as soon as you leave the county, or maybe it exists in fringe areas of Bexar. I believe I've seen a few businesses or apartments just north of the Stone Oak area of San Antonio, just barely outside the city limits but still in Bexar County, that have the 830 area code. Fair Oaks Ranch, which is in Bexar, Kendall, and Comal counties, has both area codes.

Can you call 817 from 214 as a local call? I can call from Katy to Houston as a local call (with the appropriate plan from Consolidated Communications), so I'm wondering if I can do a similar thing in DFW like Frisco to North Richland Hills?

No.... they're different cities, unlike Greater Houston where there's really only one major city.
