One thing population growth does is increase political power. The 2010 census gives Texas four more US Congressmen.

On this site at least, it is because there are more than a few posters who consider more growth to be evidence that their city is better/more favorable/cooler than other cities. It's about proving their city's might by dissing other cities.

It is very dumb.
