My husband and I are looking for ideas for nice places in Texas. We prefer something in the northern or eastern areas, within an hour of a major airport, with a nice terrain--not totally flat. We want to have a few acres but do not have to be totally out in the country. Other things on our wish list ( which we realize might have to be altered somewhat ) include a friendly community with activities that do not totally revolve around the churches), within 30 minutes of reasonable shopping. We would also like to be close to a river so we can kayak and close to a good, reasonably busy small airport where we can keep our small airplane. We're thinking of looking at the area north of Dallas, the area west of Fort Worth, and the Athens/Tyler. Any ideas for other areas where we might start looking would be greatly appreciated. Or thoughts on the areas we're considering.

Why did you mention retirees? OP is not looking for retiree city... And another thing, Nacogdoches has awful hospitals.

Nacogdoches and Lufkin is not the place to be for shopping, nearest place is in Houston which is 2 hours away. OP is wanting within 30 minutes of reasonable shopping.
