My husband has taken a job that is now moving him to Victoria. Any advice as to where we should look for a home? We will rent before buying, so we are interested in a good area that is safe. We want to spend about $1000/mo. Doable? We are moving from a suburb of Atlanta, GA and am curious as to what day to day life is like in Victoria. Any info and advice is much appreciated!!!!!

Very doable - I had lived in Victoria for almost two years (2005-2007) before I moved to Austin. I was single with a very good income, but I didn't want a huge or fancy house, because I worked in Beeville and was on the road commuting more than I was in the house! I lived on Fernwood Circle in the Fleetwood subdivision, off John Stockbauer (207 to be exact, if you want to see if it is available). I bought my house at about $95,000 and sold it 2 years later at $135K to an investor so it is now rental - it was 1400 sf, 3 br/2 ba, huge patio and huge backyard, all brick, built in late 1980s. It was a VERY quiet neighborhood with good neighbors (I STILL keep in touch with three of the families!), and apparently close to the schools (although I don't have kids). Restaurants and the mall were about 5 minutes away.

The people in Victoria are VERY VERY friendly and it is a very family-oriented town, with all the necessary shopping spots. There are lots of good local places for food (you've got to try La Tejanita...on Sam Houston, I think...) and it is close enough that you can be in Houston, on the coast, or in San Antonio within a couple of hours drive. Traffic in the town was not bad at all. It is HOT HOT HOT but probably less humid than Atlanta. I do remember everyone's electric bill being extremely expensive though.

If you have any questions, feel free to message me, and welcome to Texas!

My house guests just shake their heads in amazement, when they see how friendly people are in Victoria, compared to wherever it is they came from.

Aside from that, I live a pretty unconventional lifestyle, so I can't answer many questions from the perspective of, say, a working family. I do know there is a very low cost of living.

It's the perfect size and situation for a city. It is far enough from any larger city, that just about everything you would need is located here. Yet, it is small enough that you can get around easily with no traffic hassles. I've been here for four years, and I have yet to make my first trip to Houston, Austin or San Antonio (except for a few ball games)---just no need to go. There are two full-scale hospitals, and one of them (Citizens) consistently ranks as one of the top five or ten in Texas.

No Spanish is ever required, everyone either speaks English or tries really hard to learn it and prefer to speak English with Anglos, although Hispanics will be heard speaking amongst themselves in Spanish, but it doesn't matter because what they are saying is none of your business anyway.

Is there a part of town we need to shy away from? We have a toddler and want to make sure he is safe.
