Catman, seems you mentioned on the NM forum that I would like Canyon.

I found the homes there to really be cheap around that area, which is really good.

I just saw a photo of the Grand Canyon of that area. That is truly beautiful.

My question is, what is there to do in that area? I rather got used to seeing wonderful photos of Ruidoso and Capitan and what they have to offer, but they also offer snow, and I can't get used to the snow. I like the idea of a VA hospital being in Amarillo. And hey, I can be in "Amarillo by morning". Ha.

Default About Canyon

Jessaka,
Here are some links for Canyon, TX. It has about 13,000 people and is a nice community. The people are friendly and it is close to Amarillo, which has lots of shopping.

I have had some family in the area for many years and Canyon has not had a tornado that I am aware of but the panhandle is in tornado country as is most of Texas. Lubbock had a tornado hit in the 1970s I think. They are rare, it wouldn't be an issue with me but it would be a good idea to have a storm shelter just in case.

You might look around in the San Angelo area. It is a nice small city and warmer in the winter then the panhandle.

crackerjack,

thank you so much, I was just looking at that area, and i know i would love san angelo from the photos i have seen of it. but it is so far away from everything else, mainly san antonio since my husband needs to be closer to a VA Medical Center than that. i am back to looking an nm areas.

...i'm a Viet Nam vet and have spent more time in Vet hospitals than i care to count. As far as Vet hospitals, none compare to the quality of the center in Amarillo.

also, i like Canyon/Amarillo due to the central location. Not far to the mountains in northern New Mexico and Colorado...not far from Oklahoma for fishing, etc. Also there is beautiful Palo Duro Canyon about 20 miles out of town.

Odessa/Midland is semi-ok...you cant believe the difference in the attitude of a general population located only 17 miles apart than these two towns. Midland has every store/outlet you can imagine.

in West Texas, small towns are the only way to go.

oh, and the San Angelo vacinity is where west Texas starts getting away from the desert and into the nice green area, big trees, river, lakes, etc.

imo-gateway to the Texas hill country.

Mesa,

That is good to know about the Amarillo VA. I know the one in San Diego has been wonderful.

How about the wind and wind chills there? That rather bothers me.

If we don't end up buying a home on our trip to NM we will head out that way.

One thing I like about that area is the fact that a VA is close by and the city is rather small compared to say, San Antonio, Dallas, San Diego, ABQ. I am just tried of city driving.

I like that housing is cheap, and you can buy some land for the price that we want to pay.
