It gets cold in the panhandle!! But it is no different than anywhere really in TX. You're going to deal with the wind, blistering hot in summer and freezes you even more in the winter.

Default for Jessaka +1

I'm from Ruidoso (12 years) now living in Childress, TX (2 years). I just registered and don't know how this forum thing works but just wanted to say...there used to be a VA in Big Springs, TX...thought it was still there. I am Nam-era vet and am under VA care now. I found Albuquerque VA to be AAA+ Anyway, while I can no longer take the altitude of Ruidoso, I must still say that it and the surrounding area (Capitan, Tulurosa) have the best overall weather I have ever found ANYWHERE!!!!

I lived in AMarillo for 13 years and have friends who still live in Canyon, plus I worked at the university in Canyon for 5 years. Canyon is a great little town, and West Texas is so different from the rest of Texas. I'm telling you, THE best people are in West Texas. I didn't think the winters were too terribly bad, but I was born and raised in Chicago, so your mileage may vary. However, that being said, everywhere I've lived since I left Chicago at the young age of 17 has been either overseas in the South Pacific or below the Mason-Dixon line, so I tend to think my blood has thinned out, and in that light, the winters aren't that bad. Yes, they get one inch of snow and the town closes down, which I always thought was funny, but the snow rarely stays but a few days. We get a big storm every now and then but every few years maybe. Tornadoes are always a possibility but I that wouldn't prevent me from moving to an area. I think the hail is a bit more of a concern, seeing you get wonderful thunderstorms with hail every summer, but....such is life. The best friends I made in life ever I met in West Texas. You'll not see sunsets anywhere like the ones you will there. And Amarillo is a hop, skip, and jump up 27 and it has just about everything you need. I currently live on the West coast and although the move was great for my career, moving away from West Texas was a mistake on every other front. So....take it for what it's worth.

The inlaws are originally from Happy, the next little town due south of Canyon, so while I haven't lived there, have spent a good bit of time there.

I agree with the positives that have been given, will say the winters are more frigid there than what we have here in Dallas, but think you can have some relief in the summers when we are baking in 100+ heat during July and August.

One thing I will highlight that has been mentioned in passing but not really accentuated is having West Texas A&M in the town. Any small town anywhere in America is enriched when it is a college town.

Hello to all and hope 2009 is going well for you. I am active duty Air Force and we are stationed here at Grand Forks, North Dakota. I wanted to know if anyone has had their daughter play for Canyon High...I retire in two years and have a 6th grade girl that is very good and would like for her to try and play for Canyon. I have looked around and Canyon is the very best and full of tradition. Anyone with any information ...I would be so thankful.dave

conanS: The winter in the Panhandle is considerably more severe than it is here in DFW. The southernmost parts of TX hardly have winter at all. There is quite a difference in Texas climates.

sagegallery: I would love to live in that part of NM! I love it out there. My favorite part of TX is the Alpine/Marfa/Ft Davis area.
