Health insurance is available. We don't get it from the company ourselves. It's $300/month for family coverage. I would rather pay $100/month for high deductible coverage and pay bills out of pocket. I think it works out better. All things considered, though, I don't think the health insurance is too bad.

please see revision to my post. also with high turnover the older worker is very hesitant to switch jobs.

Alright, I get it. Essentially, people don't want jobs.

I get it now.

He ended up having to go with people he wasn't really happy with, just because there were so few to choose from.

I'm genuinely confused! In an area with high unemployment and so many people saying there aren't any jobs, WHY didn't he have tons of people applying? These weren't bad jobs, I really don't get it.

Thoughts?

(He's asked me not to mention where he works because the positions have been filled)
Can you post an example of his wanted ads? (without giving away identification of course) I would like to see an example of a job offering that does not get much response in the Tampa area.

No, I can't. It's a contracted company and it might irritate somebody.

the company that complaints about lack of applicants will be often the same company that will fire you so fast you will get whiplash.
high turnover reduces applications and puts a big squeeze on HR to fill postions. its not always all about the worker.

honsestly, it is about 630 bucks a week before taxes. take roughly 30% in FED income tax/FICA/SS, you are down to about 440. Take another 100 per month for health insurance, you are looking at taking home 415 a week/830 bi weekly. In a decent resturant or bar in tampa you can EASILY do that in 2 or 3 nights.

If you are collecting unemployment and were laid off from a decent paying job, you are bringing in far more money then that. when it comes to supporting a family, people will swallow their pride and opt for unemployment if it pays out better then a salary.

If you are collecting unemployment and work illegaly off the books, you can make a substantial living.

From reading the responses here it would appear that, incredibly, they don't. But people sure don't mind whining and complaining about not having a job. If I needed a job, I'd be taking any job and be grateful for it. Blows my mind.

United Healthcare who is the "provider" at my hubby's job will charge us $890 per month for the whole family, 2 adults and 3 kids. @40k a year, you do the math and pay the rest of our bills and we DON'T HAVE ANY CREDIT CARD BILLS NOR MORTGAGE AT THIS TIME, nor car payment. Just plain old house bills.
Gee, if I had no mortgage, no rent, no car payment, (already have no credit card bill) we'd be doing very well for our family of 8. What in the world are you spending your money on?

Also, my dh doesn't set the salaries.

I'm just really hoping that these responses are outside the norm.

ah... here comes this argument! seen it before!

I personally couldn't imagine living on that salary as a single guy, much less with a family of 8.

In reality, i could downsize my lifestyle substantially and live just fine on that salary, but i could not imagine supporting myself and 7 other people on it.

If you can... you are an excellent money manager.
