We have been looking for Home Owners insurance for our home in Pasco county. We have to have sinkhole coverage. Can anyone recommend any good insurance companies that will include sinkhole coverage at a good rate besides Citizens? We live in an older home, built in 1973. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi, I have a policy with Tower Hill. They have sinkhole coverage. We pay around $1300 a year in Pasco.

First Home Ins. Comp.

They only cover primary homes and in my case I saved a lot of money compaired to what I paid before. The came to replace Hanover who stopped covering in our area and were new, but I checked them out and it all looks good and we kept the same coverage, just paid way less.

It depends where in Pasco county. During different periods (particularly during hurricane season) a lot of companies refuse to write policies. If you are a AAA member you can shop with them for different carriers. Sinkhole coverage nearly doubles the policy price but I wouldn't be without it.

When shopping I usually call agents who aren't specific to one carrier in order to get quotes from different companies. I was stuck with Citizens for a while and am now with Homewise.

Might want to read this from the Herald Tribune in Sarasota, posted over in the Sarasota forum recently. Very disturbing.

I've been told by three agencies that Citizens is my only choice west of US 19.

I am east of 19 but not by much. Either way, despite never making a claim on any homeowner's policy and having great credit, companies refused to write new policies in my area. Took three years before Citizens pushed me off to Homewise. Sometimes it's a matter of where and when. My policy renews during peak hurricane season. I make a few dozen calls each year, have even called some realtors who insist they have an "in" with some homeowner's companies. None of them write at that time of year either. It doesn't hurt to make the calls. You never know.

How can you get a mortgage if you don't have insurance on the home? Don't the banks in Florida demand that they be on the insurance policy in order to qualify for a mortgage?
